I’m raffling my ouija boards for charity.

I put a ton of work into these, seriously, but I do not believe in the products they were made with and therefore do not feel comfortable selling them to the public. If I’m going to sell a product to my community, I’d want to know that it’s the best that I can make it.

Hi, I’m Justin Mabie, it’s 2026, this is my face in case you’ve never seen it, and this is one of those “about me” posts that will probably always feel weird. Allow me to introduce (or reintroduce) myself!

I make short documentary films about makers: their work, their shops, and their lives beyond the workbench. The series is called Call Me Mabie and you can find it on YouTube and This Old House Makers Channel on Roku, Amazon Prime, Samsung TV, and a few other streaming platforms I can never remember. There are nearly 40 episodes featuring makers of all kinds, with many more to come.

I studied film production and then started my video career in Southern California working in the music industry with Grammy-winning artists. Soon after, I accidentally wandered into the maker world, despite having zero woodworking background, by doing video work for Laguna Tools. At the time, I genuinely couldn’t tell you the difference between a bandsaw and a tablesaw. From there, I bounced around the states chasing video work within the maker community: Charleston, Austin (where Call Me Mabie was born), Rhode Island, and now Maryland.

Rhode Island is also where I spent three years working for a certain epoxy company: a deeply unhealthy, exploitative, retaliatory place that happily walked all over me while doing the same to the maker community I care so deeply about. I stayed longer than I should have, learned more than I wanted to, and came out more inspired to create than ever. The upside is that 2026 looks very different. I now work full time for a company that respects me, the work I do, and actively supports Call Me Mabie- something I definitely did not have. I typically make the films on nights and weekends and I’m excited to work with good companies moving forward.

I’m East Coast based but constantly on the road. While I usually live behind the camera, I’m also a hobbyist, very-much-a-novice maker who’s just getting started thanks to patient friends and an absurdly generous community.

The maker community is my world. It gave me purpose, belonging, and friendships I’ll carry for life. If you’ve watched, shared, supported, or trusted me with your story- thank you.

2025 sucked for me. I usually roll my eyes at the annual New Year’s Eve “this year sucked” posts but 2025 genuinely did for me. The only reason I made it through was the people around me: the maker community, the friends who showed up, checked in, laughed along, and had my back. I must say, grateful doesn’t even cover it.

The accident was 10 years ago to the day. I remember where I was and thinking, “but I just saw them play a few days ago”. After a head-on collision in a tour bus with a semi, the band The Ghost Inside was surely never to play again. But that’s when my pal Larry kicked into “go time”. Now, a decade later, I can still say “I just saw them play a few days ago”, many thanks to Larry Tkaczyk: maker and father.
